retaining highly effective teachers in urban education
a. Describe the issue that you wish to adopt.
The issue that i am choosing to adopt is something that we touched on in class. Teacher experience. In class it was stated that the average service of current teachers is one year. This was eye opening to me, and something I believe is unacceptable.
b. Explain why this issue is important for the nation, Rhode Island, and to you personally. School reformers point to the education system as it currently sits and claims that it is slipping, and teacher attrition could be one of the contributing factors to the reformers claim. This issue is important for Rhode Island due to the high stakes testing requirements that the state has determined necessary. To me personally, I hope to teach in an urban setting, and I look forward to making lasting relationships with fellow teachers, and would be frustrated to be continually see the effective teachers I would work with leave.
c. Decide on at least five questions that you feel should be included in your synthesis.
Why are teachers leaving the profession? More importantly, why are highly effective teachers/quality teachers leaving? What factors are most important in retaining highly effective teachers? What are the costs in replacing teachers, both monetarily and psychologically? What is an accepted definition of "highly effective"
d. List some possible sources for your research. peer reviewed journal articles will be the basis of my research. I have already conducted a literature review in this area, and will add to it by looking for new info on defining teacher effectiveness.
